It\u2019s important to understand, the basics at least, of what some of the most common thyroid terms mean.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve put together a brief glossary of common thyroid terms associated with thyroid medical conditions, from the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thyroid.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Thyroid Association<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.btf-thyroid.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">British Thyroid Association<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These range from terms associated with but not limited to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thyforlife.com\/hypothyroidism-and-hyperthyroidism\/#:~:text=them%20to%20euthyroidism.-,Hypothyroidism%20(Underactive%20Thyroid),-What%20is%20hypothyroidism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hypothyroidism<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thyforlife.com\/hypothyroidism-and-hyperthyroidism\/#:~:text=dosage%2C%20if%20necessary.-,Hyperthyroidism%20(Overactive%20Thyroid),-What%20is%20hyperthyroidism\">hyperthyroidism<\/a>, thyroid cancer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thyforlife.com\/what-is-goiter\/\">goiters<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thyforlife.com\/thyroid-nodules\/\">thyroid nodules<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2ee76b1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2ee76b1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h6><b>Antibodies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proteins in the blood that detect and destroy foreign bodies, such as viruses and bacteria. Auto-antibodies are antibodies that attack the body\u2019s own tissues, such as thyroid cells, and cause Graves\u2019 disease and Hashimoto\u2019s thyroiditis.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h6><b>Autoimmune disorder<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A disorder where the body makes antibodies that attack its own normal cells and tissues, for example, autoimmune thyroid disease and diabetes.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h6><b>Autoimmune thyroid disease<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The body makes antibodies that attack its own normal cells and tissues, for example, Graves\u2019 disease and Hashimoto\u2019s thyroiditis.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h6><b>Autoimmune thyroiditis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the most common form of hypothyroidism. The body\u2019s immune system attacks the thyroid cells as though they were foreign cells, leading to hypothyroidism. This is also known as Hashimoto\u2019s thyroiditis.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h6><b>Endocrine gland<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A gland that produces hormones.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h6><b>Endocrinologist<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A doctor specializing in diabetes and disorders of the thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h6><b>Goiter<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A swelling of the thyroid gland.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h6><b>Graves&#8217; disease<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An autoimmune condition that causes hyperthyroidism &#8211; an overactive thyroid. Graves\u2019 disease is much more common in women than in men. It got its name from Robert Graves, an Irish physician who described patients with this condition in the 19th century.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h6><b>Hashimoto&#8217;s thyroiditis\/Hashimoto&#8217;s disease<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also known as autoimmune thyroiditis. This is the most common form of hypothyroidism. It is a disorder in which the body\u2019s immune system attacks the thyroid cells as though they were foreign cells, leading to hypothyroidism.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h6><b>Hyperthyroidism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An overactive thyroid gland. The T4 and\/or T3 are raised and the TSH is low.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h6><b>Hypothyroidism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An underactive thyroid gland. The T4 level is low and the TSH level is high.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h6><b>Larynx<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Adam\u2019s apple.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h6><b>Levothyroxine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A synthetic form of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4) contained in medication to treat an under-active thyroid gland. It is one of the most popular thyroid medications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h6><b>Metabolism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The speed at which the body\u2019s cells work to break down oxygen and calories to convert to energy. The speed is controlled by the thyroid gland. If there is not enough thyroid hormone, the cells work too slowly; if there is too much thyroid hormone, the cells work too fast.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h6><b>Nodule<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lump (on the thyroid or in the neck area).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h6><b>T3 (triiodothyronine)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another term for triiodothyronine, one of the hormones made by the thyroid gland.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h6><b>T4 (thyroxine)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another term for thyroxine, one of the hormones made by the thyroid gland.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h6><b>Thyroid eye disease (TED)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An eye disease that is associated with Graves\u2019 disease.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h6><b>Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hormone secreted by the pituitary gland that regulates the hormonal output from the thyroid gland. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This hormone regulates the amount of T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine) produced by the thyroid gland. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its measurement is used to confirm the diagnosis of hypothyroidism (raised TSH level) and of hyperthyroidism (depressed TSH level).\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h6><b>TSH Test<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Measures the amount of TSH in the body. This test is often the most common and basic test used to determine a thyroid disease.
