It can be pretty alarming! And it\u2019s absolutely normal to wonder what it might be and whether it\u2019s serious. The truth is it could be anything from a swollen lymph node (due to an infection) to an allergic reaction. But what if it\u2019s thyroid-related?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in your neck that helps regulate various bodily functions by producing and storing thyroid hormones. These hormones influence your body\u2019s metabolism and its response to other hormones. Sometimes, lumps can devel<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">op in this gland. They are known as\u00a0<\/span><b>thyroid nodules<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These are fairly common especially in older people, affecting up to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thyroid.org\/thyroid-nodules\/#:~:text=We%20do%20not%20know%20what,of%20such%20nodules%20are%20benign.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">half of adults by the age of 60<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the American Thyroid Association. They can be solid, fluid-filled (cysts), or a mix of both (complex nodules). When symptoms do occur, they may include a <\/span><b>noticeable swelling in the neck<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>difficulty swallowing or breathing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and<\/span><b> hoarseness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But, to determine the size, number, and characteristics of thyroid nodules, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3683194\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thyroid ultrasound<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is performed.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on the size and characteristics of the nodules and on your individual risk factors, your doctor may recommend a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thyroid.org\/fna-thyroid-nodules\/\"><b>fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. An FNA biopsy is a simple procedure where a thin needle extracts a small sample of cells from the nodule for examination under a microscope to assess the risk of cancer.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/header>\n\t\t\t\t<header class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-cc1c1a1 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"cc1c1a1\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;jet_parallax_layout_list&quot;:[]}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-63b2302\" data-id=\"63b2302\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cf305b5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"cf305b5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How are thyroid nodules treated or managed?\n<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0351c71 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0351c71\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The management of thyroid nodules mainly depends on their size, whether they are causing symptoms, and the risk of cancer. If the FNA biopsy performed confirms a benign (non-cancerous) nodule, you might not need any treatment. Your doctor will likely recommend monitoring it with regular checkups and ultrasounds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in some cases, medication or even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/publications\/dictionaries\/cancer-terms\/def\/minimally-invasive-surgery\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">minimally invasive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> procedures may be recommended. Let\u2019s say the biopsy biopsy showed that the nodules are cancerous, your doctor will discuss with you a treatment plan, which might involve <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thyforlife.com\/thyroidectomy-101-t\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">surgery (thyroidectomy)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thyforlife.com\/radioactive-iodine-therapy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These treatments will most likely result in hypothyroidism as they reduce thyroid function due to the removal or destruction of thyroid tissue, therefore necessitating lifelong thyroid hormone replacement therapy (usually levothyroxine) to manage the hormone deficiency.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A relatively newer procedure known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thyforlife.com\/radiofrequency-ablation-for-thyroid-nodules\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">radiofrequency ablation (RFA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be recommended in the cases of large<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, benign thyroid nodules. RFA involves the use of high-frequency radio waves to heat and destroy abnormal thyroid tissue.
