This has led to misconceptions about the diet\u2019s health benefits and who should be following it. When someone with celiac disease consumes gluten, their immune system attacks the lining of the small intestine, leading to inflammation and intestinal permeability, commonly referred to as \u201cleaky gut.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research suggests a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2111403\/#:~:text=Collin%20et%20al69%20found,hyperthyroid%20and%2010.3%25%20hypothyroid).\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strong link<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between celiac disease and autoimmune thyroid disorders, particularly Hashimoto\u2019s thyroiditis. This is because people with celiac disease are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3741914\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more likely to have other autoimmune conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to shared genetic factors and immune system dysfunction. Here\u2019s where the research gets even more interesting. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/europepmc.org\/article\/med\/28315909\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggest that a gluten-free diet might improve symptoms and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30060266\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">autoantibody levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in people with Hashimoto\u2019s, even if they don\u2019t have celiac disease. However, the evidence is still not considered to be conclusive, as pointed out by a review of the scientific literature. While the exact mechanisms are not fully understood, NCGS shares symptoms with celiac disease, such as gastrointestinal discomfort, fatigue, and headaches. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29662290\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggest a potential association between NCGS and thyroid disorders, including Hashimoto\u2019s thyroiditis. Research shows that individuals with Hashimoto&#8217;s disease have a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coeliac.org.uk\/information-and-support\/coeliac-disease\/conditions-linked-to-coeliac-disease\/autoimmune-thyroid-disease\/#:~:text=People%20with%20autoimmune%20thyroid%20disease,1%25%20in%20the%20general%20population.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher prevalence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of gluten intolerance or celiac disease compared to the general population. Celiac disease has been found to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33804451\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impair the absorption<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of essential nutrients (including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33804451\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">iodine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), which are needed for thyroid hormone production. When it comes to Graves\u2019 disease, the exact relationship between gluten and the disease is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2666396120300029#bib0007\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less understood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sensitivity to gluten causes changes in the intestine. In individuals with celiac disease, the intestinal permeability triggered by gliadin allows<\/span><b> toxins and undigested food particles <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to pass through the gut lining into the bloodstream, where they may trigger immune responses and inflammation. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2666396120300029#:~:text=Increased%20intestinal%20permeability%20can%20increase%20immune%20activation%20involved%20in%20thyroid%20disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has shown that a leaky gut can contribute to increased immune system activity associated with autoimmune thyroid diseases.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autoantibodies are antibodies that target the body\u2019s own tissues.
