most complex organ of the human body and has a remarkable ability to functionally restructure and adapt throughout life. In response to learning, experience, injury, or environmental influences, this three-pound mass can reorganize its structure and the connections between brain cells and induce a functional change in these cells. This phenomenon is known as neuroplasticity, and it enables us to learn new skills, form memories, develop new habits, recover from brain injuries, and adapt to changes in our environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thyroid hormones, released by the thyroid gland, regulate various bodily functions, including metabolism, heart rate, and body temperature. Interestingly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/neurology\/articles\/10.3389\/fneur.2019.01103\/full#:~:text=Studies%20also%20demonstrate%20that%20TH%20signaling%20is%20critical%20to%20proper%20functioning%20of%20short%20term%20(227)%20and%20long%20term%20synaptic%20plasticity%20(228).\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that thyroid hormones also influence neuroplasticity. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6925884\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acta Neuropathologica Communications<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2019 investigated the role of triiodothyronine (T3), the active form of the thyroid hormone, in promoting neuroplasticity after a stroke. Following a stroke, the undamaged areas of the brain can take over some of the functions originally handled by the damaged area. This study\u2019s findings highlight T3 as a promising therapeutic agent with the potential to help people regain brain function after a stroke.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, thyroid hormones play a significant role in both brain development and adult brain function, which will be discussed in the rest of this article. This complex feedback loop is known as the <\/span><b>hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The hypothalamus, a part of the brain, produces <\/span><b>thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which stimulates the pituitary gland, located near the base of the brain, to release <\/span><b>thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. TSH, in turn, stimulates the thyroid gland to produce and release <\/span><b>thyroxine (T4)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>triiodothyronine (T3)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Once produced, T4 is converted into the more active T3 in various tissues throughout the body, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3978256\/#:~:text=Deiodinase%202%20is%20the%20primary,the%20CNS%3A%20astrocytes%20and%20tanycytes.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including the brain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When thyroid hormone levels are too low, the hypothalamus and pituitary gland increase TRH and TSH production, respectively, to stimulate thyroid hormone synthesis. Conversely, elevated thyroid hormone levels suppress TRH and TSH production, preventing excessive thyroid hormone secretion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These feedback mechanisms ensure that thyroid hormone levels remain within a narrow range to maintain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/publications\/dictionaries\/cancer-terms\/def\/homeostasis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">homeostasis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For this reason, iodine intake is especially critical during pregnancy.
