The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7353323\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ancient Greeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used wine and iron as a cure for male impotency. During the 17th century, English physician Thomas Sydenham advocated for iron to be used as a treatment for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3258305\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chlorosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, otherwise known as the \u201cgreen sickness\u201d or \u201cvirgin\u2019s disease\u201d. The condition affected adolescent females and caused symptoms such as pale complexion, exhaustion, and loss of appetite. Today, it is understood that the condition is attributed to iron deficiency.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iron deficiency is extremely common worldwide and is the primary cause of anemia. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3685880\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.6 billion <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people across the globe are anemic, while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3685880\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people have nutritional iron deficiency. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/health\/anemia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anemia <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a blood condition where the body is not producing the right amount of healthy red blood cells. Without red blood cells, the body cannot transport enough oxygen to the organs, tissues, and other cells. This helps improve the amount of oxygen in the blood and alleviates symptoms of anemia. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/6940487\/#:~:text=Ascorbic%20acid%20facilitates%20iron%20absorption,combat%20nutritional%20iron%20deficiency%20anemia.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iron <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from food is absorbed by the intestines and separated into two forms: heme and nonheme iron. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3967179\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heme iron<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> makes up 95% of usable iron in the body. It mainly comes from red meats, poultry, and fish. High levels of heme iron are associated with a higher risk of cancers such as pancreatic cancer and lung cancer. Iron also makes myoglobin, a heme protein that takes oxygen and stores it in the muscle tissues. Ferritin is a valuable clinical tool when looking at iron deficiency as ferritin reflects how much available iron is being stored in the body. Your doctors may order a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/a-to-z-guides\/ferritin-blood-test\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ferritin blood test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to measure the amount of blood protein available to help store iron. The test will show whether there is too little or too much iron being stored in the body. Normal ferritin levels will range from 24 to 336 \u03bcg\/L in men and 11 to 307 \u03bcg\/L in women. Lower-than-normal results are a significant indicator of iron deficiency and anemia. This is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3666375\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">process <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of forming red blood cells and their components.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong><i>Hypothyroidism<\/i><\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anemia is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6166193\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in individuals with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.endocrineweb.com\/conditions\/hypothyroidism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypothyroidism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where the thyroid gland is not producing enough thyroid hormones and the metabolism slows down. This, in turn, reduces the production of red blood cell materials.\u00a0 Anemia and hypothyroidism can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28400547\/#:~:text=Anemia%20in%20hypothyroidism%20might%20result,contribute%20to%20anemia%20in%20hyperthyroidism.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bone marrow depression, comorbid diseases, and deficiencies in folate, vitamin B12, and iron. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pamw.pl\/en\/node\/3985\/pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0In women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with decreased thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), hemoglobin concentrations were also much lower than in those with thyroid dysfunction.\u00a0 Hypothyroid patients also had a reduced number of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/immunology-and-microbiology\/erythroid-cell\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erythroid cells<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, cells in the bone marrow that help produce red blood cells, and decreased erythropoietin in the plasma. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK536997\/#:~:text=Erythropoietin%20(EPO)%20is%20a%20glycoprotein,PO2%20directly%20regulates%20EPO%20production.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erythropoietin <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is produced in the kidneys, liver, spleen, and bone marrow, and the body needs it to stimulate red blood cell production. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pamw.pl\/en\/node\/3985\/pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red blood cell distribution width<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (RDW) where red blood cells are of unequal widths is also a sign of iron deficiency anemia. The level of thyroxine in the blood and the RDW are negatively correlated. This means that when RDW increases and there is a variety in sizes of red blood cells, the level of thyroxine in the blood decreases. Hyperthyroidism and iron deficiency anemia can be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/cen.13450\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">linked <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because hyperthyroidism causes a rise in ferritin and red blood cell production, leading to a higher demand for iron. If there is not enough iron available, it can contribute to iron deficiency anemia.
