But what exactly are stem cells and how can they be used for medical treatment purposes? Stem cells are basically cells with the potential to develop into different types of cells in the body. Sounds cool, right? The unique ability of these<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biologyonline.com\/dictionary\/cell-differentiation\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">undifferentiated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cells to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biologyonline.com\/dictionary\/cell-differentiation\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">differentiate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into various types of cells makes them attractive in the field of regenerative medicine. Stem cells can be obtained from various sources, such as the bone marrow, adipose tissue, umbilical cord blood, and embryonic tissue.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stem cell therapy for thyroid disorders involves the transplantation of stem cells into the thyroid gland. The stem cells can secrete growth factors that can stimulate the growth and regeneration of the thyroid gland. Generally,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8968462\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">several studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have shown that stem cells can be used to repair or replace damaged thyroid tissue, resulting in significant improvements in thyroid function. However, it cannot be overemphasized that more research is needed before this therapy can become a standard of care.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to research findings from a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/cell-stem-cell\/fulltext\/S1934-5909(15)00411-7\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cell Stem Cell<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2015, embryonic stem cells acquired from mice can be used to generate thyroid follicular cells (the cells responsible for the production of the T4 and T3 hormones). Within eight weeks of transplantation into mice that had undergone<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thyforlife.com\/radioactive-iodine-therapy\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">radioactive iodine ablation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to destroy their thyroid tissue, the stem cells developed into follicular cells and produced regular amounts of the T4 and T3 hormones. While this is a promising finding, much more work still needs to be done in order to ensure safe and effective clinical application in regenerative medicine for thyroid disorders, especially given that findings from such research conducted in animals may not be directly applicable in the human system.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is worth noting that there are<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/stem-cell-therapy-thyroid-issues-3233018\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">currently no published studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in which stem cell therapy has been successfully carried out for human patients with thyroid disorders.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5439004\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers in Japan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> successfully induced functional thyroid follicular cells that are capable of secreting free thyroxine (FT4) from human-induced pluripotent stem cells. However, these cells generated thyroid hormone <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in vitro<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (that is, outside a living organism; in a test tube, culture dish, or some other artificial environment).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/jgm.1531\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Gene Medicine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2010 investigated the use of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in the treatment of thyroiditis in animal models. The results showed that stem cell therapy can result in a decrease in inflammation of thyroid tissue.
