Together, they are a part of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/dcbiol11031109\/chapter\/5-3-functions-of-the-integumentary-system\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">integumentary system.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They block germs and foreign matter from entering your body, protect you from internal injuries, help control your body temperature, and maintain the water content (moisture) in your body.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h6><strong><i>Skin<\/i><\/strong><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your skin is an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2836429\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endocrine organ<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that produces hormones while also repairing injuries. It is also your body\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.org\/sites\/default\/files\/publication_pdfs\/1%20SS%20Skin%20Cancer_chapter%201.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">largest <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">organ, making up nearly 15% of an adult\u2019s body weight. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The epidermis layer of your skin is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8002265\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vital <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for skin hydration, and healing cuts and wounds. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skin varies in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/357363659_The_impact_of_Hashimoto's_disease_on_skin_hair_and_nails\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thickness <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">around the body, with the eyelids being the thinnest and the soles of the feet being the thickest. The skin prevents infection, controls the loss of water and nutrients, and prevents harmful substances from pollution and UV rays from entering the body. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skin is important for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/dcbiol11031109\/chapter\/5-3-functions-of-the-integumentary-system\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thermoregulation <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(regulating the body\u2019s temperature). Accessory structures called sweat glands secrete water, salt, and other substances and help the body cool down. When it gets cold, arterioles in the skin will constrict to minimize the amount of heat that is lost. It also plays a significant role in our<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4219649\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> immune system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as there are both innate and adaptive immune mechanisms like macrophages, natural killer cells, antimicrobial peptides, mast cells, and CD8+ T cells that respond to microbial changes within or under the epidermis layer of skin. Overall, the skin has an important function as a physical and chemical barrier against bacteria, fungi, and pathogens.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h6><strong><i>Hair<\/i><\/strong><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hair or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5905671\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hair follicles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also play a role in the body\u2019s ability to heal injuries while also influencing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/treatment\/types\/immunotherapy\/angiogenesis-inhibitors-fact-sheet#:~:text=have%20side%20effects%3F-,What%20is%20angiogenesis%3F,chemical%20signals%20in%20the%20body.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">angiogenesis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(the formation of new blood vessels) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6659986\/#:~:text=Neurogenesis%20is%20the%20formation%20of,the%20hippocampus%20(Figure%201).\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neurogenesis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(the formation of neurons). Surprisingly, hair follicles also house<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5905671\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stem cells<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which are useful for clinical trials to develop treatments for, among other illnesses, chronic ulcers and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3312643\/#:~:text=Tendinosis%20is%20a%20degeneration%20of,cause%20tendinosis%2C%20when%20done%20repeatedly.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tendinosis <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or the degeneration of collagen in a tendon due to overuse.\u00a0 At the base of a hair follicle, there is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/skin-problems-and-treatments\/picture-of-the-hair\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bulb <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where living cells divide and build up the hair shaft. Within the bulb, there are blood vessels that feed the cells and help deliver hormones to control hair growth and structure. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A hair follicle goes through <\/span><b>three phases<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: 1rem;\"><b>anagen<\/b> or <b>growth phase<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: 1rem;\"><b>catagen<\/b> or <b>transitional phase<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: 1rem;\"><b>telogen<\/b> or <b>resting phase<\/b><\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: 1rem;\">It is during the telogen phase that growth stops and the old hair is pushed out by new hair. For example, if a mosquito were to land on your arm, your hair follicles would sense it and send a message to your brain and spinal cord. This message would trigger you to see the mosquito and swat it away.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h6><strong><i>Nails<\/i><\/strong><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5383514\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nails <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have several functions including protecting the fingers and toes, helping with scratching, grooming, protection, cosmetic purposes, and improving dexterity. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nail configuration can tell medical information<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on a patient\u2019s genetics and lifestyle including malnutrition, disruptions in blood flow, neurogenic factors, and underlying diseases or conditions. Nails can act as a window to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4375768\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">systemic diseases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nail abnormalities can be associated with specific organ diseases like endocrine disease, infectious disease, and pulmonary disease or can be associated with systemic diseases like leukonychia or cardiopulmonary disease.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, maintaining healthy hair, skin, and nails is essential for not only maintaining your appearance but also for your overall health.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h6><strong><i>The Thyroid Gland<\/i><\/strong><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK279388\/#:~:text=The%20thyroid%20gland%20is%20a,thyroid%20hormones%20into%20the%20bloodstream.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thyroid gland<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a hormone gland that plays a role in growth, metabolism, and other bodily functions. The organ is small and located in the front of the neck. It is uniquely butterfly-shaped with two lobes sitting against the windpipe with a narrow strip of tissue. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On average, the thyroid gland weighs between 20 and 60 grams and can move around when we swallow. The gland primarily produces the hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) which can alter the structure of the hair, skin, and nails. The gland is also susceptible to diseases that limit the production of hormones and can negatively impact the quality and health of the entire body. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An underactive thyroid gland causes the patient to have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/endocrine-diseases\/hypothyroidism#:~:text=Trials%20for%20Hypothyroidism-,What%20is%20hypothyroidism%3F,the%20front%20of%20your%20neck.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypothyroidism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An overactive thyroid gland is also known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/endocrine-diseases\/hyperthyroidism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hyperthyroidism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
